“Discovery by Adventure” Field Trips

Education through Recreation

Introduction

Our mission “Discovery by Adventure” describes our commitment to hands-on, interactive outdoor education to achieve academic success.  Our experienced and dedicated educators create custom programs based on your objectives and curriculum.  Essentially, you design your own field trip.  CCA offers programs and packages from 2 hours to 4 days that include experiments, laboratory investigations, lectures, discussions, outdoor activities, field tests and enriching games.  We look forward to creating and sharing an unforgettable experience with you and your students.

Program Components

Choose the combination of components to create the ideal learning experience for your group. Each component is 2-3 hours.  Groups can combine up to 4 program components for a one day field trip or more for overnight and multi-day trips.  All components are customized to meet your state objectives, class goals and curriculum.  Upon choosing your components, call our team of marine educators and instructors and we will build your field trip based on your time availability and schedule.

Field Trip Program Components

MARINE SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The Salt Marsh Players

Mighty Mud Mongers”

Salt Marsh Ecology & Wildlife. Each student will play a particular role in a “simulation salt marsh” and see how their Components interact with the estuarine ecosystem. After the simulation, students will actively collect and identify salt marsh organisms and create a food pyramid.

Aquarium

“Undersea Adventure“

Marine Species.  Students visit the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher to get a bird's eye view of some of the magnificent ocean life off our coast.  Students may participate in scavenger hunts in the aquarium, experience a live feeding, or talk with a diver in the 24 foot dive tank with live sharks! Students will gain an understanding of the impact human interaction and development has had on marine fisheries, and explore ways to counteract future problems for marine species.

Beach Dynamics

“It’s All about the Waves”

Beach Ecology & Barrier Island Dynamics.  Learn how waves shape the coast and how animals and plants adapt.  Map the beach profile and discover how the beach environment changes with the seasons. Study how dunes form and dune plants survive on our coast.

Coquina Outcrop Study

“Underwater Reefs on the Beach”

Rocky Intertidal.  Unique to our area, the coquina outcrop here is part of a system that becomes an offshore reef.  The rocks on our beach hold sea life that has adapted to the ever-changing surf habitat of the intertidal zone. Explore the outcrop and collect living specimens for a hands-on understanding of adaptation for survival on the reef.

Coastal Habitats Nature Hike

“Beware….Meat-Eating Plants”

Maritime Forest. Investigate several different coastal ecosystems within the Carolina Beach State Park.  Explore the Venus Fly Trap trail, the Sugarloaf Dune and Carolina Bays, all fascinating features found only in the Coastal Carolinas.

CCA’s Nature Challenge

“Keep Looking!”

Use knowledge about local ecosystems to engage in friendly competition against peers to locate different objects at beach or coastal forest. This challenge emphasizes quick logic skills, knowledge of environment, physical agility and teamwork.

Introduction to the Environment

“Everyone Can Help”

Learn how to carefully observe the nature around you and interpret the many secrets of its beauty. Learn the current issues affecting the local wildlife and the steps you can take to make a difference. Teams will devise a plan to increase environmental awareness through a local project. Teams may also participate in cleaning up the beach or salt marsh as part of their trip.

Dissections (grades 6 +)

“Discover What’s Inside”

Lab Study.  Sharks (Spiny Dogfish) are excellent examples of cartilaginous fish. Explore the intricacies of shark physiology by systematically dissecting a dogfish from its dermal denticles (skin) to its internal organs and body systems. Students will experience hands-on dissection, while understanding how different parts of an organism helps it survive in its environment.

Invertebrates of the Dock

“Whose Hiding under There?”

Marine Invertebrates.  Investigate the incredibly diverse community of invertebrate organisms whose homes can be found on the submerged surfaces of docks and pilings.  Using our hands and nets, we remove and study these creatures, then return them to their habitat.

Kids Camp

From the Director
Our staff is committed to providing campers with fun and exciting opportunities to grow socially, mentally and physically. We strive to instill leadership, teamwork and curiosity through challenges, games, and activities. Combining our philosophy of “Discovery by Adventure” and teaching the importance of being stewards of the earth, we hope that our campers will become the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and share their love for the marine environment.

Brief History
Carolina Coastal Adventures summer camp has been in operation since 2001. Located on the beach, we take every opportunity to explore the wonders of our beautiful coastline. Many of our activities such as kayaking, fishing, hiking and exploring are focused on estuaries where much of our seafood starts its life. We teach our campers that these delicate ecosystems must be preserved for the future of the wildlife and ourselves. Knowledge and experiences gained at camp will serve campers well as they continue their science courses in school. Our curriculum is designed to reinforce concepts and ideas found in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSOS). Our outdoor, hands-on approach allows each individual the chance to experience and connect with the environment.

Accreditations
Our staff is trained in Wilderness First Aid, American Red Cross Lifeguard Certified, American Canoe Association Kayak Instructor, Environmental Naturalists, and experienced educators.  All motorized vessels are operated by United States Coast Guard licensed Captains.

Ratios
On water components will be no greater than 6 campers: 1 instructor.
On land components will be no greater than 12 campers: 1 instructor.

Staff
We thoroughly enjoy spending time learning with children. Our staff has a combined total of over 60 years of teaching experience. We encourage campers to ask us about our many hobbies which include; kayaking, surfing, fishing, boating, scuba diving, mountain biking, running, swimming, triathlons, astronomy, horseback riding, skiing, art, and music. If your children have similar interests or just have questions about any of these sports, feel free to ask. We are here for you.

Afterschool Programs

For those seeking afterschool programs that don
t simply babysit your children. At CCA, we focus our afterschool programs on learning about the local marine environment and how we can save our precious ecosystem. Local activities will include: trips to the local marinas to learn about the commercial fishing trade, walks in Carolina Beach State Park to identify local plants and animals, learning how to survive off the land like the American Indians, salt marsh games, making fish mobiles, volleyball and nucuum, study time and tutoring, design science experiments, etc.

Saturday Family Camps:  Get Out and Explore

For those seeking to enjoy fun and memorable adventures with your family. No skills required. Just an open mind and proper attire needed. Saturday family camp will explore nature and seek to unite your family with exciting team building games and outdoor exploration. When was the last time you relied on the whole family to group together and accomplish a goal? Our staff strives to make your day an experience you will never forget.
