John Pagenstecher aka " Capt. John"
John is a US Coast Guard master licensed Captain and runs most of our fishing and boating excursions that use boats from our powerboat fleet. He also loves to guide the sunrise kayak trips whenever possible. In the 60's, Jon spent several years at Camp Morehead, where his love affair with the Southeastern North Carolina Coast began. John's first ACA canoe course was in 1966 at Cardigan Mountain School in New Hampshire. Since then, John has worked and skied in Colorado, competed nationally in running, cycling, and triathalons. He has twice competed in World Championship Triathalons. John worked with Wild River Outfitters, in Virginia Beach, developing canoe and kayak markets and programs. During that time, he competed in marathon canoe races. In 1991 John won the “Down and Dirty Boat Building Contest” sponsored by the Norfolk Shipyards. This was a three part contest where the competitors were selected by their boat designs, then had to build them for time the first day, followed by racing them the second day. John won all segments of this contest with a design not too distant from a kayak! Over the years John was a representative for Wilderness Systems Kayaks and Mad River Canoe as well as several other manufacturers in the paddlesports industry. During his time as a rep he met and worked with Angela for several years before they embarked on a journey found in fairy tales! John is currently living out his dreams in Carolina Beach.

Angela Marshall Pagenstecher
Angela has been teaching kayaking and guiding nature tours since 1992. She has lived along the marshes and ocean most of her life; thus, has a deep love and understanding of the sea. For the last ten years she has developed a full Kayak Nature Tour and Instruction Guide Training Course and Manual. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and International Studies from Emory University, has certifications from the American Canoe Association for Coastal Kayaking Instruction, American Red Cross First Aid, and CPR.

In November of 1998 she paddled (with her husband, John Pagenstecher) the coast of North Carolina from Virginia Beach to Wilmington, an Outer Banks Expedition that explored the inside coasts of the Outer Banks and kayak camped all along the way. Angela enjoys all types of kayaking: touring, sea, surf, white water as well as wildlife and bird watching "As long as I'm out on the water, I'm happy!"

Angela enjoys introducing sheer beginners to the sport of kayaking. Kayaking can be what you want it to be: a relaxing drift with the tide, a chance to explore a serene environment, sharing creek space with an egret, a non-impact all body workout, anything you feel like! "I find that kayaking helps people therapeutically gain self-confidence with a sense of well-being and accomplishment". "You can learn kayaking in simple steps that build upon each other. I like to see students get excited about kayaking, just as I did my first time".

Angela Marshall is a co-owner and operator, with her husband John, of Kayak Carolina, a premier kayak tour and instruction operation, based in Wilmington and Carolina Beach, NC, established in 1998.

Capt. Taylor Hyatt
Taylor’s family has called this island home since 1944. He grew up with fishing rods, surfboards, and boats, as the ocean was his backyard. Taylor is also an ACA trained kayak instructor and guide, as well as a USCG Master licensed Captain. He loves to share his first hand knowledge of the water and the history of the area with everyone. If Taylor is not working on the water, he can be found in his own boat searching out the fish.

Blair Fetner
Born and raised in Rockingham NC, Blair has always had a love for the coast. She spent most of her summer’s growing up at Ocean Isle Beach in her daddy’s boat. Blair moved to Wilmington in 2003 to attend UNCW, where she recieved a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. She not only has a passion for the ocean, but one for kids as well.  As Camp Directior of “Discovery By Adventure,” Blair has her hands full throughout the entire summer!

During the off season when Blair isn't guiding kayak trips or working the with kids at Carolina Coastal Adventures, she can be found working as the Program Coordinator for non-profit agency, DREAMS of Wilmington.
